The narrator of the story made an acquaintance with the Stricklands.
Mrs. Strickland
was interested in literature and especially in people who connected with it. She very often received the guests and was very hospitable mistress. Her husband was exact antithesis to her.He seemed to the narrator a very boring person, who wasn't involved in art. However his opinion was changed, when he got to know that Strickland had left his wife and children. Many people from the society, including Mrs. Strickland considered that he had left her for a lover and spent a good time in Paris. The woman asked the narrator to go in Paris in order to find out the cause of his leaving. The narrator couldn't refuse the grieving woman and tried to help her.
